Geomatic Technologies was a major participant at the 2015 Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards (VSEA), with three projects becoming finalists, and winning the Award for Innovation and Commercialisation for its unique approach to the Bushfire Safety Clearance Program.

The Program is used to assist Victoria’s rural electricity distributors, AusNet Services and Powercor Australia to implement efficient methods for measuring conductor separation across hundreds of kilometres of lines, often in remote and challenging terrain.

GT’s mobile laser scanning solution surveys lines from a 4WD vehicle, capturing extensive data which is then processed to provide a detailed record of the state of the network. The Program takes into account key factors affecting the shape and movement of power lines, such as weather (temperature and wind) and the levels of power flowing along the lines.

“GT’s innovative system is an effective method of conducting the survey, allowing us to meet safety regulatory requirements,” said AusNet Services’ Distribution Program Owner Ash Ellawala.

“This spatial technology gives us detailed information about the spacing of our electricity conductors,” he said.

GT is now starting to explore many other uses for this information. This type of technology marks the future direction of network monitoring and management.

GT was also nominated for the Award for Spatial Enablement for its Data Warehouse Solution for the Victorian Taxi Commission. The Warehouse stores trip, operator, driver, fare and spatial details of the approximate 35 million taxi trips that Victorian passengers undertake each year.

GT was also part of the consortium nominated for developing Yarra Valley Water’s easyACCESS system, which allows developers and plumbers to submit on-line applications and manage approvals for development projects quickly and easily.

“Our success and involvement in the spatial industry’s premier event shows we are a leader in the sector, and demonstrates our strong reputation for business innovation with our clients,” said Andrew Margetts, Group Manager, Geomatic Technologies.

Geomatic Technologies is a Select Solutions’ business specialising in solving complex location, mapping and mobility needs for the essential infrastructure sector.
