Mobile and spatial technology solutions specialist Geomatic Technologies (GT) has won the Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence (APSEA) Awards for Innovation and Commercialisation for its unique approach to the Bushfire Safety Clearance Program.
The program is used to assist Victoria’s rural electricity distributors AusNet Services and Powercor Australia to implement efficient methods for measuring conductor separation across hundreds of kilometres of powerlines, often in remote and challenging terrain.
Geomatic Technology’s Group Manager, Andrew Margetts, accepted the award saying that the company was proud to win the award, as innovation is central to GT’s business approach.
“GT is proud to be recognised for solving a complex problem using innovative spatial technology,” Mr Margetts said.
“We are committed to working closely with our customers to deliver exceptional outcomes, and it is pleasing to be recognised by the industry as spatial leaders,” he said.
This program recently won the Innovation and Commercialisation Award at this year’s Victorian Spatial Excellence Awards, while three additional Geomatic Technologies projects were finalists.
“Through our program, we’ve been able to develop and implement a new concept that greatly improves the efficiency of the electricity distributors’ field data collection, and the quality and volume of that data,” Andrew said.
“We are lucky to have a lot of very talented people in our business and this award is the result of our passion to solve complex problems,” he said.
GT’s mobile laser scanning solution surveys lines from a 4WD vehicle, capturing extensive data which is then processed to provide a detailed record of the state of the network. The Program takes into account key factors affecting the shape and movement of power lines, such as weather (temperature and wind) and the levels of power flowing along the lines.
“GT’s innovative system is an effective method of conducting the survey, allowing us to meet safety regulatory requirements,” said AusNet Services’ Distribution Program Owner Ash Ellawala.
“This spatial technology gives us detailed information about the spacing of our electricity conductors,” he said.
Geomatic Technologies is a Select Solutions’ business specialising in solving complex location, mapping and mobility needs for the essential infrastructure sector.
